Technical Assistance

Workshops

Live and web-based technical assistance workshops are generally held bi-annually to accommodate all regions as possible. Topics covered in workshops include:

Web Application System (PPT - 18 MB)
The application for CHGME funds is available for eligible children’s hospitals through the web. This presentation walks you through the steps needed to complete an application for CHGME funds.

To get a user account, contact the System Administrator.

IRIS Proxy (PPT - 353 KB)
The purpose of Intern and Resident Information System (IRIS) program is to capture information about interns and residents in approved graduate medical education programs who work at hospitals that receive direct medical education payments and indirect medical education payments.  Hospitals that do not file a full Medicare Cost Report can use the IRIS Proxy.  Full filers can also utilize the IRIS Proxy.  The IRIS was designed and is available through the Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services.  The IRIS Proxy was designed to address the need for a non-DOS data collection system and is available to children’s hospitals.

Resident FTE Assessment (PPT - 272 KB)
CHGME fiscal intermediaries assess the number residents reported by each of the freestanding children’s hospitals in their respective initial application for funds.  This process is guided by an assessment methodology that mirrors efforts by CMS to assess FTE resident counts.  The FTE Resident Assessment Process is conducted between October 1 and March 1 of the Federal fiscal year.  The Reconciliation Application reflects the results of these assessments and both DME and IME payments to hospitals are adjusted based on the FTE Resident Assessment Process and the reconciliation applications.  This presentation describes the process and the requirements associated with the FTE resident assessments.

Annual Report (PPT - 323 KB)
Congress reauthorized the CHGME Payment Program until 2011 and mandated that freestanding children’s hospitals submit an annual report to describe the status of GME in their institutions.  The Annual Report focuses on capacity to train residents and fellows as well as on the content of the training.  The Annual Report must provide information on types of training programs that the hospital provides for residents; the number of training positions for residents; types of training provided; changes in residency training; and the number of residents who completed training.  The presentation provides background and discussions on how to complete an annual report.
