Program Data

Analyses

The Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) Payment Program was created to provide Federal support to freestanding children’s teaching hospitals for graduate medical education (GME) that is comparable to the Federal support provided by Medicare to adult acute care hospitals.  The Federal support for GME started in 1965 when Congress recognized the importance of the mission of teaching hospitals, defined as: (1) training the workforce to ensure access and quality care; (2) serving as the safety net for those with only Medicaid and CHIP as their insurance coverage; and (3) enhancing research and innovations in medicine and health care.

Analysis of data related to the CHGME Payment Program helps to assess the overall impact of the program in ensuring a physician workforce that will provide quality care to children in the US. Analysis can include various topics such as:

  • Trends in the annual dissemination of program funds to specific geographic regions in which hospitals are located,
  • Trends in the number of FTE residents being trained.
