Geriatric Academic Career Award (GACA)

Purpose

The purpose of the Geriatric Academic Career Award (GACA) program is to support the career development of physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, dentists, pharmacists, and allied health professionals in academic geriatrics who provide training in clinical geriatrics including the training of interprofessional/interdisciplinary teams of health professionals.  

Eligibility

Individuals eligible to receive awards must:

  1. Be board certified or board eligible in internal medicine, family practice, psychiatry, or licensed dentistry, or have completed any required training in a discipline and be employed in an accredited health professions school that is approved by the Secretary;
  2. Have completed an approved fellowship program in geriatrics or have completed specialty training in geriatrics as required by the discipline and any additional geriatrics training as required by the Secretary; and
  3. Have a junior (non-tenured) faculty appointment at an accredited school of allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, dentistry, pharmacy, or other allied health disciplines in an accredited health professions school that is approved by the Secretary. 

Institutions eligible to receive payments and to submit applications on behalf of individuals applying for a Geriatric Academic Career Award include accredited health professions schools of medicine, osteopathic medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, dentistry, pharmacy, or allied health.
