Two public use database
files are developed for each National Sample Survey of Registered
Nurses (conducted approximately every four years):
- General
Public Use file provides survey responses at the State
level and includes educational attainment, employment status,
income and other demographic information
- County
Public Use file provides additional geographic fields
for Metropolitan Statistical Area and county level identification.
Fields that could identify the respondent are withheld to protect
privacy. Each response has a statistical sampling weight, allowing
the user to make workforce estimates.
Records are
stored as flat files in ASCII format and available at no cost on
a single CD with documentation that explains variables available
to the public, the range of values for each variable and marginal
distributions of discrete value responses and how each transformed
variable was obtained. SAS is not required, but the documentation
includes a SAS input stream file with a library of label names and
variable categories.
The largest
and most recent database is the 2000 survey, with more than 35,000
respondents. Other available years are: 1977, 1980, 1984, 1988,
1992, 1996.
