Description:
Exhibit 1 provides an overview of the major components of the nursing supply model.
The diagram illustrates that the model starts with the number of licensed RNs
at the beginning of the year. Increases to the number of licensed RNs include
graduates from U.S. nursing schools and graduates from foreign nursing schools.
Decreases to the number of licensed RNs include nurses who retire, leave due to
death or disability, or change careers. Throughout the year some RNs increase
their highest level of education and migrate across states. Nurses also age by
one year. The end of year number of licensed RNs becomes the starting point for
the next years' projection.
