employment. This was more than twice

and 2020, while the population 65 and
over is projected to grow 69% between
2000 and 2020.

care physicians in South Carolina in

per 100,000. South Carolina ranked 32nd
among states in physicians per capita.

South Carolina had 56 active primary
care physicians per 100,000 population
in 2000, lower than the rate of 69 per
100,000 for the entire country.

Medical schools in South Carolina graduated
206 new physicians in 2000. South Carolina
ranked 26th among the 46 states with
medical schools in number of medical
school graduates. On a per capita basis,
South Carolina graduated less new physicians
per 100,000 population (5.2) than did
the entire United States (6.4) and ranked
28th among the 46 states in medical
school graduates per
capita.

practicing in South Carolina in 2000.

registered nurses (RNs) in South Carolina

Carolina ranked 25th in the nation in
dentists per capita. The per capita
ratio of dental hygienists was substantially
lower then the national rate.

increased by 71% between 1991 and 2000,
while the state’s population grew
13%. The result was a 52% increase in
dentists per capita compared to a 16%
increase nationwide.
